Making Solar Houses

This week, students in the sixth grade are learning about heat.  As part of the unit, they each made a mini solar house, and will learn about how radiation affects temperature inside the solar house with and without covering the windows.

Sixth grade students at Westside recently visited Springville Junior High School to watch a production of Guys and Dolls.  Afterward, the students walked back to school from the junior high.

Faculty vs. Students Indoor Soccer

On Thursday, March 6th, sixth grade students at Westside played a game of indoor soccer against their teachers.  In the end, the teachers did prevail, however the students did keep it close!

Anti Bullying Assembly with Bud Jeffries

Last week, students had the privilege to witness one of the strongest men in the world, Bud Jeffries, lift one of their teachers into the air with one hand!  Not only did he do this, but had a heavy bowling ball dropped on his stomach.  Why did he do this?  He did this to emphasize that we can be strong, and not listen to bullies, or become one of them.

Ballet West visits Westside

Ballet West recently came to Westside and performed for the students.  Many students were chosen to come up and learn how to do various ballet moves, and found it more difficult than it looks!

Reasons for Seasons

This last week, sixth graders have been learning about the reasons why we experience seasons.  To understand this concept, they participated in a lab where they were able to measure energy levels at various points throughout earth's orbit around the sun.  Hopefully this solidified the idea that it is the TILT of the earth's axis that causes seasons.

Valentine's Day Celebrated at Westside

On February 14th, most classes celebrated the special day in one way or another.  Many classes participated in Valentine treat/card exchange as well as a Valentine's Day party.  Students in the upper grades were given the option of designing their own card receptacle.

Six students from Westside chose to participate in the science fair.  The science fair is an optional activity for students.  The projects need to meet the criteria for the scientific method to be considered for the district science fair.

Recently, Mrs. Paynter's fifth grade class did a Reader's Theatre reading of the Boston Tea Party.  They even dressed for the occasion!

Spotlight on Mrs. Mitton

Ashley Mitton, a technician here at Westside, helps students with whatever is needed.  She was born in Provo and grew up in Mapleton and Springville.  She is one of our recently married teachers.  Ashley's favorite things do do are reading and running.  Her favorite thing about Westside is the students and that the teachers are awesome and fun to work with.  Ashley thinks the most important thing teachers and educators can do is to help students learn and build their confidence.  An interesting fact about her is that she used to teach second grade, but now she works for Americorp.

Parent Conferences/SEP's

On January 9th, parent conferences were held at Westside.  Many teachers, however, chose to do what are called "Walking Report Cards" which give the students the opportunity to showcase what they have learned, and demonstrate their knowledge of various concepts in certain subject areas.

Geography Bee

The week students came back from the Christmas break, Westside held the annual Geography bee.  Two students from every class had to win several rounds in order to progress to the school-wide level.  The two top winners were Natalie Bourgeous, and Owen Ngaluafe.  Owen was the finalist from Westside.

Greek Olympics

Recently, sixth grade students learned about Ancient Greece.  As a finale to their unit, students participated in the Greek Olympics, where the students were broken up into teams from Sparta, Athens, Megara, and Corinth.
